Smals research heeft een tool voor het beheren van open source licenties onderzocht: "Fossology kan ondersteuning bieden als governance tool bij het bouwen van software die gebaseerd is op open source software.  De tool laat toe om de onderliggende licenties te analyseren bij het gebruik van open source softwarebibliotheken"
